I thought that I could change for you
But baby there ain’t nothin’ that you can do
It ain’t all up to you

I try to say the things you wanted me to say

But it ain’t all up to you

I hope by now you’ve learned your lesson

And you know what you did wrong

You should’ve let me have my freedom
That’s why we didn’t last very long

You just want complete control

But little do you know it ain’t all up to you

I know now that you’re so lost

And you had to pay the cost
It ain’t all up to you

You just want to lead the way

There was nothing I could say
It ain’t all up to you

There were times I couldn’t even feel

Cause you decided what was real, but
It ain’t all up to you

I didn’t know that I was part of your fantasy

And that you had a script you wanted me to read
I played your part too well and I could see
There was nothin’ else that I could be
‘Cause you held the key to bein’ me

Now I’m thinkin’ on my own

And I’m leavin’ you alone
It ain’t all up to you

Just try and stop me if you can

But you will never stop a real man
It ain’t all up to you

What you thought you had you lost

And little did you know the cost
inside track
This song is one of my favorites and is dedicated to all those men or women who are in very controlling relationships.  My advice?  Get out as quickly as possible.  Karen Oliver, who also does many of the backup vocals on my songs, plays the part of a “control freak,” but she’s anything but.  I invited Guitarist Tom Walker to play on the song and he suggested using the wah-wah effect which seems to work nicely.  Also, my thanks to Ray Crabbs who let me borrow his car one afternoon to shoot the music video for this song.

Here's the wah-wah effect isolated from the rest of the song:

REVIEWS

I really dig the blues guitar.  It adds depth, soul and character.

“It Ain’t All Up To You” makes a Cuisinart-y blend of sawing blues-based slide and an enormous smacking beat.  Even amid this sweeping cacophony, Nicole – showing impressive range – sings in a quietly conversational way that recalls early 1970s Eric Clapton or, a key influence of his, J.J. Cale.

"It ain't all up to you"...interesting. This song is almost Pop, but a little bit Country...I like it, but I think it could use some more depth which could be achieved through vocals. However, lyrics are great, as is usual from John Nicole!
