LYRICS
"I Don't Play Piano"
Words & Music By John Nicole
Copyright © 2010 Mind of Music

You know damn well I don’t play piano
‘cause if I did I’d play you back to me
We know so well I don’t deserve you
But baby, I simply choose to believe

Something happened from high above
Something made us fall so damn deep in love
Once upon a time, once upon a time
When you and I were young

I tried to find the words to say I’m sorry
‘cause if you’d just forgive me we could be
Back again together in our own love story
Loving, holding, kissing, so tenderly
You and me, the way we used to be

[Instrumental]

I searched to find the right inflection
The harmony we sang throughout the years

Nothing ever seems to work and upon reflection

I know that absolutely nothing stops the tears

Mmmm… nothing ever stops, nothing ever stops the tears
Mmmm… nothing ever, ever stops the tears

I never stop the tears

[Bells]

Only now when I am playing
Can I feel you deep inside of me
With my melody I’m praying
Praying hard for what could be
You and me, the way we used to be

Spoken:  You know, baby, tell me you feel it too

[Instrumental]

You know damn well I don’t play piano
‘cause if I did I’d play you back to me
Oh yeah, we know so damn well I don’t deserve you

No, no, no, but baby I simply choose to believe

I simply choose to believe…

Breaking up after a serious relationship always seems to provoke a period of intense songwriting.  It’s unrealistic, however, to believe that an ex-girlfriend will hear one of the songs on the radio, realize how much she was loved and then come running back to you.  Unfortunately, life doesn’t work that way.

Listen to a much earlier rough version of the song:

REVIEWS

Nicole’s lines rush out in a torrent on “I Don’t Play Piano,” this series of pained memories set to an emotional signature on the violin.

Some of the best lyrics I've heard in a decade...the juxtaposition of the music against the lyrics is nothing short of awesome.
