Happy New Year for the last time my dear
Do you remember how we welcomed every year?

With a hug and a kiss and a promise from our lips, we would always be together

Happy Valentine’s Day for the last time my lover
Do you remember how we loved beneath the covers?
With a candle and a song, we could never go wrong
We would just keep getting better

When I think of all the times we shared

Throughout the years, how much we cared
The thing I know we’ll miss the most is raising glasses in a toast
To celebrate those special days, the way we were at holidays

Happy Fourth of July for the last time, my girl

Do you remember how the fireworks would swirl?
With a hug and a kiss and a promise from our lips
We would always be together

And Happy Christmas for the last time, my love

Do you remember kissing with the mistletoe above?
With a candle and a song, we could never go wrong
We would just keep getting better

So, Happy Life for the last time, my friend

Do you remember how we thought we’d never end?
With a hug and a kiss and a promise from our lips
We would always be together
With a candle and a song, we could never go wrong
We would just keep getting better

When I think of all the times we shared

Throughout the years, how much we cared
The thing I know we’ll miss the most is raising glasses in a toast
To celebrate those special days, the way we were at holidays

With a hug and a kiss and a promise from our lips

We would always be together
With a candle and a song, we could never go wrong
We would just keep getting better

We would just keep getting better

Happy Life was written on a beach in New Jersey during 2008.  It’s one of those songs that has been recorded by be countless times.  I just never seemed to get the song to sound right until I met Scott Harlan who helped me arrange and record the song in his studio.  The song was never intended to be sung as a duet until I listened to Laura Baron’s beautiful voice.  Also, originally, the song was much longer because I tried to include every major holiday in the lyrics.

REVIEWS

"Happy Life" is a mind-blowing and utterly amazing track that deserves to be on the airwaves, the silver screen and your iPod.  This is the type of song that singer/songwriters dream of making. It's extraordinarily beautiful and very moving. The vocals soar and the melody is rich. It is perfection. The vocals soar to incredible heights as John's rich tones and Laura Baron's silky smooth voice compliment each other perfectly. This and the deeply moving lyrics easily make this not only the best song off of this album, but also quite possibly one of the best songs of the year!

We are treated to a duet with Laura Baron, "Happy Life", that harkens back to the Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville ballad "Don't Know Much". The interplay between the two works especially well in this track. When John is able to play off another individual (as can be said for several of the other songs in the album on the whole), he seems more confident and it shows. The song in particular is something most couples can identify with, the celebration of holidays and  honoring memories. It encapsulates the theme of love and loss throughout the rest of the album nicely.

What a great song! Part country/folk/ballad....sad, haunting...yet, uplifting in a sense...there is hope. Wonderful lyrics and Laura Baron is...well...fabulous!
